New Integrated Query system is ready to use
|
(Sep. 6, 2012)
|
-
The new Integrated Query system is ready to use! This new approach to locating data in StreamNet is based on a combination of tabular filters and sorts with a map based location selector. Recent beta tests identified a few issues that we are still working on, but the system is functional for wider use. Please use the Feedback button to let us know about any issues or problems you encounter, and be aware that there are still issues with older versions of some browsers. Currently, Chrome and FireFox work best.
Try this new way of viewing and retrieving consolidated StreamNet data here or click the big button on the main page of the StreamNet website. Use the Quick Start Guide, available on the query system Help button, to help you get started.

New Integrated Query system ready for testing – volunteers wanted!
StreamNet is asking for volunteers to begin using and testing an entirely new approach to obtaining data from the StreamNet database. The system is based on an integration of tabular and map based approaches. This is a beta version, and does not yet have all functions that are envisioned, but the basic concepts are implemented. We are working on a few known issues, but would like to obtain real world feedback on how well it works, problems encountered, suggestions for further development, etc. We intend that this approach will be amenable to inclusion of additional types of data in the future. If interested in working with the new system and providing feedback, please sign up here. To get started, use the Quick Start Guide, available on the query system Help button

Data Store Updated
|
(March 24, 2011)
|
The Data Store and Data Publishing Service were improved in three ways today.
The first improvement makes it easier to send data sets to the Data Store. The Data Publishing Service, which is used to describe a data set and send it to the Data Store, previously was a Windows program that had to be installed on a computer. The need to install the program caused problems for employees of agencies which do not allow the installation of outside software by employees. The new version is Internet-based, so there is nothing to install. The new version also provides greater flexibility in how files are submitted to the Data Store. It also provides greater control over data set files and data set descriptions, allowing you to update files or descriptions easily.
The second improvement speeds the process of describing the data. Users whose email address is in BPA's CBFISH (Taurus) system will find that their contact information has already been entered for them in the required format.
The third improvement is somewhat esoteric, but important and very useful. When describing a data set, information such as the type(s) of data, the geographic scope covered, species described by the data set, and contact person for the data set are recorded. Such information that describes a data set is called "metadata." The old Data Store and Data Publishing Service did not quite meet federal standards for data set descriptions (the "FGDC metadata standard"). The new Data Publishing Service guides you through completion of data set descriptions that fully meet FGDC standards, and provides some tools to quicken the process. The Data Publishing Service is designed to meet the needs of most biologists: those of us who are not GIS or metadata experts, and who need to describe a biological, physical, or chemical data set rather than a GIS layer, and do so in a reasonable amount of time.
If you have a requirement to share data sets, or if you simply wish to archive one or more data sets and make them available to all so they are not lost, the StreamNet Data Store and associated Data Publishing Service is an excellent resource for you.

New Search Capability in StreamNet Data Query
|
(December 20, 2010)
|
-
NEW in StreamNet: Type in the name of a stream or dam rather than deal with huge lists of possibilities! When building a query to locate data in StreamNet it is often necessary to specify a stream name or a dam, but unless the query is already quite detailed, the list of possibilities can often be quite large, sometimes more than the 1,000 records that the system is able to display. We have now implemented an alternative: start typing in the name of the stream or dam, and the possibilities fitting only those letters are displayed as you type. Then, simply select the stream or dam of interest. This approach is available now, but has not yet been implemented in all portions of the query system. We are continuing to work on this, and will soon have it functional throughout the query system. We think that this will make building data queries much easier, but we would like to hear back from you on how you think it is working and whether you would like to see additional capabilities added to it. To provide feedback, just email us at project@streamnet.org.

Award Winning Website
|
(August 11, 2010)
|
-
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has just won a special achievement award from the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies
for its Crucial Areas Planning System website. The CAPS online tool provides multiple data layers describing Montana's fish and
wildlife and their habitats to assist planners and developers in protecting areas of crucial fish and wildlife value.
The CAPS tool was developed by many people in the department, including StreamNet's Montana Project Leader. The aquatic data layers
in the tool draw data heavily from Montana's StreamNet database, also known as MFISH, and the fisheries databases were used as a
model for developing terrestrial layers.
StreamNet is pleased that data developed through our project was useful in supporting this award winning tool designed to identify
and protect crucial fish and wildlife areas in Montana.

Downloadable Database of Major StreamNet Tables Updated
|
(May 12, 2009)
|
An updated MS Access version of the StreamNet database can now be downloaded. The database has been updated to include new count data and is georeferenced to the new Mixed Scale Hydrography. It also now includes ten example queries to demonstrate how to dereference coded information with lookup tables, although you will likely want to tweak the examples to fit your own needs. Some static data sets have been removed, but those remain available in the Data Store or elsewhere on the StreamNet website. Note that the Access database does not have a user interface or the dynamic features that are part of the StreamNet online data query and interactive mappers. It is primarily intended for use by "power" users engaged in regional scale analyses. Use of this database requires significant experience using Access, and most users will find the online systems more suited to their needs. You can find this updated database, as well as previous versions, on our database download page.

StreamNet Adopts 'Mixed Scale' Hydrography
|
(May 8, 2009)
|
On May 1, 2009 we instituted a "mixed scale hydrography" as the basis for georeferencing data. This updates the 1:100,000 scale hydrography by adding 1:24,000 scale streams and other streams where we have data. This is an interim step in preparation for eventual conversion to a system compatible with the high resolution National Hydrography Dataset.
We use the hydrography by tying individual fish data records to locations on streams in our GIS. Until now data were tied to the 1:100,000 scale PNW River Reach Files. The change to the mixed-scale hydrography allows us to keep current with the systems in use by our data contributing partners.
What does this mean for you?
- More streams means more data. Within the state of Washington we now have data for many streams not available in the older system. Some streams have been added or edited in the states of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, and selected streams have been extended into Canada. As a result, additional data are now accessible via our online data query system. For example, we now have fish distribution data for over 5500 additional streams.
- Greater precision and compatibility. Because the new hydrography shows greater detail, river mile measures have been updated and provide greater precision. In addition, the new hydrography has been reconciled and integrated with California's "CalHydro" dataset, so we are better able to share fish data with our colleagues in California and our sister project, CalFish.
All of our downloadable spatial datasets, and the online mapper, will be re-published in the near future to reflect the change in our base hydrography. A planned update later this year will incorporate higher resolution hydrography within the state of Oregon.
StreamNet's goal is to make as much standardized fish data available to our users as possible. We edit and maintain a routed hydrography to georeference our data and to remain compatible with the systems used by our data contributing partners. While we are not suggesting that others use our new mixed scale hydrography for referencing their data, the best available version is available for download along with its related metadata. In addition, the 1:100,000 scale PNW River Reach Files will remain available for download as an archived dataset.

StreamNet Web Site Updated
|
(March 6, 2009)
|
- As of March 6, 2009 our web site has a new look. Beyond the change in the look and feel, we added features which we hope will aid in usability of the web site.
- The organization of the web site was improved, and we made it easier to find information of interest with fewer steps.
- Outdated information was removed. In case you can't find something you're looking for, we include a link back to the old site. If there is something of interest to you on the old that we did not include, please let us know.
- The search function now searches our web pages, documents, the Data Store, and the files on our ftp site, which is a great expansion of the search capabilities compared to the old search function. (Not yet included, but which we are looking into, is the ability use a Google-like, text-based search function to find data in our main database.)
- The online data query system was improved so that scrolling horizontally to view all the columns in a record is no longer necessary. Long entries that used to result in very tall rows that were difficult to read are now truncated, with a link to view the full entry. Other usability improvements were also made.
Please let us know how you like the new look, and any additional features you think would improve our delivery of fisheries data.

Data Sharing Guide published
|
(March 6, 2009)
|
StreamNet has just released a white paper entitled Considerations for Regional Data Collection, Sharing and Exchange, which is a guidance document describing actions to consider as natural resource agencies develop comprehensive approaches to data management and data sharing.
The guide is not prescriptive but offers options for addressing a series of considerations important to making data collection, management, and sharing efficient and effective. Recommended actions are targeted toward multiple audiences, including natural resource agencies, field staff, funding entities, policy makers, and database management projects.
The guide is premised on the concept that current monitoring data are too valuable to use only once, and it provides recommendations intended to facilitate wider sharing and use of important monitoring data. These recommendations should also be helpful as regional entities work toward developing a regional-scale approach to data sharing.
The guide ends with a series of checklists that consolidate recommendations for the various entities that have a stake in data sharing, either in creating data, using data, or managing data. We hope that the guide provides useful insight into the steps that will have to be addressed as coordinated monitoring programs are developed among agencies and field projects.
You can download the Data Sharing Guide here.

StreamNet Web Site Will Be Down Several Days
|
(Winter 2003/2004)
|
-
The StreamNet Internet site is scheduled to be down from Wednesday morning December 17 to Monday December 22, 2003 while the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) moves its offices to a new location at 205 SE Spokane St., Suite 100, Portland, OR 97202-6413. While the Internet site is scheduled to be up again on Monday December 22, the scheduled dates could vary somewhat due to unforeseen circumstances. Also, it is possible that some functions of the web site, such as the data query system, on-line mapper, e-mail, or ftp could be down longer than the main web site. If you need assistance, phone calls are being forwarded to the new location; you can contact us at 503-595-3100 and we will help to the extent possible. We will be unavailable on Dec. 18 and 19 during the actual move. The StreamNet Library and the Library Internet site, www.fishlib.org, will be unaffected.
The down time will also affect other Internet sites hosted by PSMFC, including PSMFC (www.psmfc.org), Alaska Fisheries Information Network (www.akfin.org), Pacific Fisheries Information Network (www.psmfc.org/pacfin), Fisheries Economics Data Program (www.psmfc.org/efin), Recreational Fisheries Information Network (www.recfin.org), Regional Mark Information System (coded wire tag database, www.rmpc.org), PIT tag Information System (www.ptagis.org), Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program (www.pikeminnow.org), Habitat Education Program (www.psmfc.org/habitat), and Essential Fish Habitat (www.psmfc.org/efh/efh.html). Also affected will be the data query system for the California Cooperative Anadromous Fish and Habitat Data Program (CALFISH, www.calfish.org). The length of down time may vary among these sites.
