STREAMNET'S DATA EXCHANGE FORMAT (DEF)

Purpose of the StreamNet DEF  —  The StreamNet DEF is the database structure template used when new data are added to the main StreamNet database.  (The Data Store is separate from the main database and does not use the DEF.)  Although not identical in every way, the DEF closely resembles the database structure used to store data for data management purposes.

Intended Audience  —  The StreamNet DEF is meant for internal use by StreamNet personnel.  However, we occasionally receive requests to share our DEF — thus the existence of this web page.

The DEF is very complex, is meant as a guide for those who already understand it, and in general cannot be well understood without interacting with StreamNet personnel and without a significant time investment.  If you wish to use or examine the StreamNet DEF, please download the file (use the link below) and then contact us to set up a discussion.  We are happy to assist you.

Did you know our StreamNet Mapper lets you obtain data directly from the map? First navigate to the specific stream, 4th-field HUC, Columbia River subbasin, county, dam, or hatchery of interest and make sure it is selected as the active layer. Then, select the "Get Data" tool in the toolbox, and click on the feature of interest. This takes you into the StreamNet data query system, listing all data categories available for that feature. Searching by 4th-field HUC also includes a link to EPA data. Give it a try!
