StreamNet Data Store's Data Publishing Service
Instructions for using StreamNet Data Store's Data Publishing Service
The Data Publishing Service lets you add your own data set to the StreamNet Data Store. Items in the StreamNet Data Store will also be available through other Internet search sites such as the Geospatial One-Stop, the NBII, the NED portal, and regional data sharing web sites.
To add a data set to the Data Store, two things are needed: 1) a description of the data set, and 2) the data set itself. You will soon be able to do this on-line. Until then, you can use the Data Store Publishing Service software, which is a very small program that fills these two needs by letting you provide the description of your own data set, and by sending your data set directly to StreamNet.
The Data Publishing Service is for data sets. If you wish to submit a report with summary graphs and tables, but not the actual data the graphs and tables are based on, then don't use the Data Store. Instead, email your report directly to the StreamNet Library at fishlib@critfc.org.
Requirements:
1) The publishing software must be installed on your computer. (Includes an ActiveX ftp component.)
2) Your screen resolution must be greater than 800 X 600.
As an alternative you can use is this spreadsheet template, but the program is easier for both you and us.
To use the StreamNet Data Store Publishing Service software, follow these steps.
-
- Step 1)
- Make a temporary folder on your hard disk -- for example, make a folder named 'abc123' on your C: drive. After installation you will delete this 'abc123' folder, so it must not be where the StreamNet IDS tool will be installed, and it must not be a folder where you keep any other files.
-
- Step 2)
- Download the StreamNet data submission tool's installation package from ftp://ftp.streamnet.org/indy/StreamnetDataStore.exe. Save this file into the 'abc123' folder you made in Step 1.
- Step 3)
- Click your 'Start' button and then click on 'Run...'. In the box, enter 'c:\abc123\StreamNetIDSpackage.exe' and click 'OK.' (The exact command you enter will vary if you did not use the 'c:\abc123' folder.) A 'WinZip Self-Extractor' window will open. Be sure the 'Unzip to folder:' box in this window says 'c:\abc123' (or whatever you used in the first step) and then click the 'Unzip' button. After the files unzip you can click the 'Close' button.
- Step 4)
- Click your 'Start' button and then click on 'Run...' again. This time enter 'c:\abc123\setup.exe' in the box. Click the 'OK' button. Follow the directions to install the StreamNet IDS program. When done, you can delete the 'c:/abc123' folder and all the files in it -- you no longer need this folder or the files in it. (If you are unable to install the program, click here.)
- Step 5)
- To use the program, click on:
> Start
> Programs
> StreamNet Data Store
> StreamNet Data Publishing Service
Once started, the Publishing Service software shows a help window that provides context-sensitive guidance on its use.

Updates:
If you installed this program before but a newer version is available, please follow these steps to get the newest version. The current version is 1.1.4, created December 11, 2007. (Versions before 1.1.3 were called the "Independent Data Sets Tool.")
- Step A)
- Find where on your hard drive the file named 'StreamNetIDS.exe' already exists. Most likely this will be in:
'c:\program files\StreamNet Independent Data Sets (IDS)\StreamNet IDS Submission Tool'. Start the program. If you have version 1.1.2 or later then no updates are needed at this time.
If you don't find the file 'StreamNetIDS.exe, then search for 'StreamNetDataPublishing.exe'. Most likely this will be in:
'c:\program files\StreamNet Data Store\StreamNet Data Publishing Service'. If you have this, then no updates are needed at this time.
- Step B)
- Download the newest version from ftp://ftp.streamnet.org/indy/StreamNetDataPublishing.exe.
Save the file to the same folder where the old version is located. It is OK to over-write the existing file (but it doesn't hurt to make a backup first).
- Step C)
- Run the program. If version 1.1.4 starts up, you're done! If you get an error, do the following:
- Step C1)
- Back up any existing information files (.xml) and .zip files you have created for use with the IDS tool.
- Step C2)
- Uninstall the existing program.
- Step C3)
- Download and install the latest version of the program. Follow the directions in Steps 1-5 above.
- Step C4)
- Restore your information files (.xml) and .zip files from your backup, if necessary.
