The Select Criteria box contains all of the criteria available in the Map Catalog Query. The user may choose any combination of data for which information is available. The criteria are divided into four broad categories:
1) Species/Run
2) Geographic Areas
3) Point Locations
4) Map Theme
In this query system, no criteria are required. Therefore, to view all maps currently available in the map catalog simply click the View Information button.
The order in which you select criteria depends on the information you wish to access. In general, select the criterion that is of primary concern first and then proceed to narrow your search. For example, if you are most interested in a specific species, select the species of interest and then proceed to a geographic area, a map theme, or other criteria. Similarly, if you wish to learn what maps are available for a given geographic area, select the geographic area first.
To view Available Information for any criterion -- or any combination of criteria -- simply click on the criteria of interest. The system will build a list of available choices within that criterion or combination of criteria and display these in a pop up box. Once you select one of the available choices, the criteria will be shown on the right side of your screen in the box labeled Your Criteria. To further refine a query, select another criterion. That criterion will be added to the right-side box. You may enter as many or few criteria as you wish.
Once you are satisfied with the criteria you select, click the "View Information" button at the bottom of the Your Criteria box and the query will be executed. The system will generate a list of the maps available that meet your criterion.
Query criteria are cumulative. That is, the first criterion selected determines what subsequent criteria may be chosen. This insures that a query not be attempted for which there are no maps. This feature can be exploited to determine what are available for a particular species or for a particular area. For example, by first selecting Species = Chinook, then Columbia Subbasin = Grande Ronde, the user will be presented with a range of available maps for chinook in the Grande Ronde. Similarly, one might choose to first select Columbia SubbasinGrande Ronde and then choose Species = Chinook or, for that matter, any other species that might occur in that subbasin.
By using as few criteria as necessary to achieve the desired results, you will improve system performance. For example, if you are interested in the Yakima River subbasin, it is not necessary to first select State = Washington, then Columbia Subbasin = Yakima. Doing this will yield the same results as selecting Columbia Subbasin = Yakima only, but will be slower.
To clear all criteria and start over, click the Clear
Criteria button in the Your Criteria box. To clear
individual criteria that you've selected, click the X next to
the criteria you wish to clear in the Your Criteria box.
1) Exactly to Scale - denotes that the geographic scope of the map is EXACTLY the same as the criteria you've entered.
2) Subset (see less) - denotes that the geographic scope of the map is smaller (subset) than the criteria you've entered.
3) Aggregated (see more) - denotes that the geographic scope of the map is larger (aggregate) than the criteria you've entered.
For example, if you enter the criteria State = Oregon, you may get several maps that portray just the state (rank = Exactly to Scale), some maps portraying subbasins within the state (rank = Subset), and some maps portraying the entire Columbia Basin that include Oregon (rank = Aggregate).
