Ocean Conditions Information
This page provides access to web sites that offer information related to ocean conditions. In preparing this feature we were particularly interested in information on conditions that might have an effect on Pacific Northwest anadromous fish. We were also interested in sites that provide actual data. StreamNet did not produce any of the data found here. We simply researched the available sources and provided links to those we believe to be most informative. We hope you find this feature useful. Please feel free to offer comments or suggestions via our feedback feature.

Overview
As the result of a U.S. project starting in 1981, available global surface marine data for (currently) 1854-1993 have been assembled, quality controlled, and made widely available to the international research community in easily used products of the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS). The project is a continuing cooperative enterprise between NOAA--its Environmental Research Laboratories (ERL)/ Climate Diagnostics Center (CDC), NESDIS/ National Climatic Data Center (NCDC)/Global Climate Laboratory (GCL), and Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES, conducted jointly with the University of Colorado)--and the National Science Foundation's National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).
COADS individual marine reports, complete sets of statistics, and other products from Release 1 (1854-1979), Release 1b (1950-79), and Release 1a (originally 1980-92; now extended through 1995), can be ordered from NCAR's Data Support Section.

Marine Life Research Group (MLRG)
The Marine Life Research Group is a group of scientists at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography that study the physics, chemistry,
biology, and meteorology of the California Current. MLRG scientists,
along with the other California
Cooperative Oceanic
Fisheries Investigations
(CalCOFI) groups (the Coastal Fisheries Resources Division of the Southwest
Fisheries Science Center
[NOAA / NMFS],
and the Calif. Dept. of Fish & Game)
conduct quarterly cruises off California, continuing the time-series study
of
the California Current ecosystem established in 1949.
These data provide a relatively long time series of coastal sea surface
temperatures (18 stations) and salinities (7 stations) from southern California
to northern Washington.
The University of Hawaii Sea Level Center (UHSLC) provides three online databases; the research quality
data, the World Ocean Circulation Experiment "fast delivery" data, and the IGOSS Sea Level Program in the Pacific map data.
