This dataset includes protected areas managed by federal, state and county government agencies as well as a small number of sites managed by The Nature Conservancy. These sites were originally identified in a report compiled by the Puget Sound Water Quality Action Team (Murray, M. 1998. The Status of Marine Protected Areas in Puget Sound, Vol 1 & 2. Puget/Sound/Georgia Basin Environmental Report Series: Number 8.) Most of the MPAs identified in this dataset were also identified through an inventory of marine protected areas initiated by the National MPA Center. More information about this inventory can be obtained from WWW.MPA.GOV.
This dataset compiled data from numerous sources into a single GIS dataset. The primary innovation is compiling data from disparate sources into a single dataset. Please refer to the site manager for more detailed information regarding the site's history, size, management or precise boundaries. Efforts have been made to include all available data and to incorporate the best available data. Two sites deserve special mention. 1) Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary - this site is not included in this dataset. 2) San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge - this site is actually a group of more than 80 distinct management units. This compilation includes descriptions of these sites from multiple datasets and inaccuracies are likely to exist in both datasets. Therefore precaution should be taken before relying on these area descriptions.This dataset describes the boundaries of marine protected areas in Washington State.
