The estuary boundaries are delineated according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory (NWI). These data were originally compiled for the 1998 West Coast Groundfish EFH Appendix and have not been modified from that source. These data were developed for Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Region and the Pacific Fishery Management Council in support of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider the designation and conservation of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for Pacific Coast Groundfish. Most of the estuaries were delineated by the National Wetlands Inventory using their standard protocols. However, some areas did not have digital NWI data and therefore a few estuaries were delineated using the National Ocean Services (NOS) Coastal Assessment Framework (CAF) data. They did not necessarily use the same definition to delineate an estuary as the NWI data. The estuaries delineated by CAF are: Columbia River, San Francisco Bay, Klamath River, and Rogue River. NWI and CAF provided data combined with a specific shoreline; however, the shoreline used for NWI was from different from the shoreline used for CAF. These shoreline differences may cause some gaps or spatial inconsistencies when overlaying with other shoreline data sets. Data are as complete as the source data sets -- all estuaries that had a digital data source were included. However, some areas did not have digital data for NWI, and therefore, estuaries in these areas (other than the four delineated by the CAF) were not included. Horizontal accuracy of the source data are unknown.
