This data set depicts the locations of certain structure-forming invertebrates that were found during NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service, Alaska Fisheries Science Center's Slope and Triennial trawl surveys. These surveys were designed to sample groundfish populations, not invertebrates. Therefore, the user should keep this caveat in mind when using these data. Sample locations are depicted by the position of the survey vessel at the start of the haul. Strucuture-forming invertebrate species included in the data set were chosen by members of the Ad hoc Groundfish Habitat Technical Review Committee. The invertebrates included fall into one of three categories: anemones, corals, or sponges.
<purpose>These data were developed for Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Region and the Pacific Fishery Management Council in support of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider the designation and conservation of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for Pacific Coast Groundfish. These data were consolidated and integrated in a GIS format to support spatially explicit groundfish habitat modelling and impacts assessment on a coastwide scale.</purpose>
<supplinf>Users of these data are encouraged to contact NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Race Division for more information about the trawl surveys from which these data are derived.</supplinf>

<logic>Trawl surveys were designed to sample groundfish populations, not invertebrates. The identification of invertebrates was performed with varying level of expertise and was a secondary, ad hoc aspect of the survey. Lack of an invertebrate at a particular location does not indicate that invertebrate was not there, rather it may not have been sampled, or invertebrates may not have been collected or identified on a particular haul. A single haul could have multiple, structure-forming invertebrates, and therefore, there are duplicate points included in the shape file for each invertebrate species.</logic>
<complete>The slope and triennial trawl surveys statistically sample the marine continental shelf and slope off the West Coast of the United States from Washington to Point Conception, California. Use of trawl gear limits sampling to areas of soft bottom, therefore most rocky substrates are not represented in these data. Each haul covers a 1-3 kilometer swath of the seafloor. There are large unsampled areas between the areas sampled by the approximately 7000 survey hauls.</complete>
