Kelp beds along the coast of California are a critical habitat for many important sport and commercial species of invertebrates and fishes. The California Coastal Kelp Resources Survey is the most recent statewide mapping of kelp, acquired under contract by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) from ECOSCAN Resources. Intended uses of these maps include kelp harvest assessment, kelp bed lease management, and related biological applications. Kelp bed area statistics were compiled from this and previous surveys. Original adimistrative kelp beds were merged using ArcView 3.2. Absent representation of kelp with the attribute gridcode 0 was deleted. Kelp features and harvest tracks are clearly distinguishable from base data. Legibility and line density of the scanned images are good. Map sheet matchlines register with less accuracy than the RMS data would indicate. Mismatches on the order of 50 to 60 meters were encountered. Attribute completeness of the index is very good, except for kelp bed lease information, which is limited to simple identification of currently leased beds by map sheet. Aerial photos were taken in July through October 1999 with a 35mm camera (Nikon FE-2, 50mm lens) flown at 7,500 feet ASL. The color infrared film transparencies (Kodak) were then projected onto 1:24,000 USGS topographic maps and kelp canopy features were delineated. The resulting hardcopy maps include the topographic base, shorelines, watercourses, rocky intertidal zones, offshore rocks/islands, sand beaches, selected geographic place names, and DFG Administrative Kelp Bed numbers. DFG scanned the original 24"x36", black and white paper maps into packbit-compressed tif images and georeferenced them to the above USGS base using a custom ARC/INFO application developed by ESRI. Scan resolution was 400 dpi. There are a total of 84 map images covering the coast of California. Image file names have a .tif extension and georeferencing data are contained in associated .tfw files. Detailed information about the scanning methodology is available from DFG.
