TerraLogic GIS, Inc. National Marine Fisheries Service, Northwest Region 2005 vector digital data These data depict historical west coast groundfish conservation areas, closed areas intended to protect a particular groundfish species or species group or species complex, that have been implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service. These data were developed for Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest Region and the Pacific Fishery Management Council in support of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to consider the designation and conservation of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) for Pacific Coast Groundfish. These data were consolidated and integrated in a GIS format to support spatially explicit groundfish habitat modelling and impacts assessment on a coastwide scale. These data are for use for visualization and planning purposes only. They are not legal boundaries and have not been verified for accuracy by National Marine Fisheries Service. Data for start and end dates were determined from the Federal Register or provided by Carrie Nordeen, NMFS, Northwest Region. Data were developed directly from tabular latitude/longitude coordinates. If the conservation area included a shoreline, the shoreline from the EFH merged habitat data was used for consistency between EFH data layers. However, this shoreline is not consistent along the coast and is not an official NOAA shoreline. Data are complete for the depicted conservation area and time period. Absolute horizontal accuracy is unknown. For spatial precision, geographic coordinates were input to at least 7 decimal places. Coordinates provided in spreadsheet from Carrie Nordeen (RCACoordinates_November2003.xls and RCACoordinates_September2003.xls). Coordinates converted to ArcInfo GENERATE format files, one for each line. Created line coverages in geographic coordinate system. Merged lines together with latitude boundaries, exclusive economic zone, and additional fathom curves from California DEM (20 fathom, 50 fathom) or shoreline data from EFH merged habitat data where needed. Created polygon coverage from line coverage and performed small edits to complete polygon topology. Added polygon attributes. Projected geographic polygons to West Coast Albers projection.
