This spatial dataset includes linear aquatic habitat reaches ("reaches") and descriptions primarily based on the available hydrography for each subbasin (or partial subbasin) modeled for Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT). Each reach was defined as such because it has unique aquatic habitat characteristics which separate it from surrounding aquatic habitat, such as temperature, gradient, water quality, etc. The dataset also includes obstruction reaches, which may partially or fully impede focal species passage. The reaches were originally developed during the 2002-2004 Subbasin Planning effort to define habitat units to be attributed, rated, and processed by the EDT model (see details below).

Many of the EDT ratings and results attributes are available in a separate table (edt_reach_attributes) that can be appended to the reaches via the unique item, REACHKEY. It is strongly recommended that data users consult the Mobrand Biometrics, Inc. EDT website (http://www.mobrand.com/MBI/edt.html) and the related Guidelines for Rating Selected Level 2 Environmental Attributes (http://www.mobrand.com/MBI/pdfs/AttributeRatings-June2004.pdf) to fully understand the EDT process and attribute definitions presented in this shapefile.

This table contains rated items used in the Subbasin Planning Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT) analysis of 2002-2004. The items in this table may be appended to the EDT reach shapefile (reach_edt.shp) found in this folder via the REACHKEY attribute. Please see the metadata for the EDT reach shapefile for details and information on the role of EDT in Subbasin Planning.

These data are available both as a combined GIS file for all subbasins (geodatabase format), and as individual files for each subbasin (.shp format). In the individual files, the REACHNAME field serves as an identifier and linkable attribute in lieu of a REACHKEY. The individual files may be downloaded from the StreamNet site (http://www.streamnet.org/subbasin/2001-subbasin-data.html) by selecting a subbasin and >SubPlanning Info >name_gis_data.zip >reach_edt.shp (or similar name). The combined geodatabase may be obtained by contacting CRITFC directly (this may also be made available on the StreamNet site in the near future).
<purpose>These reaches were developed by the local Subbasin Planning team in coordination with the Technical Outreach and Assistance Team (CRITFC; sponsored by the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission). They were created to spatially define habitat units to be processed by Mobrand Biometrics' Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT; http://www.mobrand.com/MBI/edt.html) model as part of the Subbasin Planning effort mandated by the Northwest Power and Conservation Council (NPCC) in 2003. (http://www.nwcouncil.org/fw/subbasinplanning/Default.htm)</purpose>
<supplinf>This dataset is intended to be used by local Subbasin Planning team members as spatial reference for rated reaches and identified obstructions as has been required by the EDT model. Each reach has a unique identifier (REACHKEY), which serves as a link between the spatial reaches and tabular EDT ratings and results. Reaches that do not correspond with the available hydrography have been digitized according to stream locations depicted on the 1:24,000 (24K) USGS DRG quadrangles.
The associated attribute table, (edt_reach_attributes), may be linked to this shapefile via the REACHNAME item and contains many attributes titled "patient" and "template." All patient attributes are denoted with "P" and template attributes are denoted with "T." Definitions for these items are present in this document (see Entity and Attribute information, or consult the Table_Attribute_Def within the Version 2.5 of the Stream Reach Editor).

Patient - describes existing (current/contemporary) conditions of the diagnostic populations and their habitat.

Template - a hypothetical potential state, where conditions are as good as they can be within the watershed. The Template is sometimes approximated with a reconstruction of historic conditions, prior to European contact.</supplinf>
