In response to a need for Columbia Basin wide evaluation of anadromous production potential during the Northwest Power Planning Council's Subbasin Planning Process, two work groups, the System Planning Group (SPG) and the Monitoring and Evaluation Group (MEG) developed the Smolt Density Model (SDM). The primary output of this model was an estimate of smolt carrying capacity by subbasin and stock which was used in the Council's System Planning Model (SPM). The SPM was a life cycle model used to predict effects on salmon and steelhead due to various strategies proposed by the planners. This model also provided an updated distribution dataset, along with a subjective habitat rating by species/run. This dataset contains output from the SDM (described above) and associated stream, taxonomic, life history, and physical habitat information.

This data category is available through StreamNet's online query system, which allows users to explore and filter the StreamNet database and download selected results. StreamNet is a cooperative information management and dissemination project focused on fisheries and aquatic related data in the Columbia River basin and the Pacific Northwest. The project provides a variety of data related to fish resources and maintains the 1:100,000 scale hydrography layer for the Pacific Northwest. Information is available through an on-line database query, interactive maps, direct data download or by custom request.

StreamNet receives funding from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA Project No.: 198810804) and is authorized under the Fish and Wildlife Program of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. Other organizations provide funding for select project components. Participating agencies contribute significant in-kind services and include: the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game (IDFG), Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fisheries Commission (CRITFC).</supplinf></descript>
